The Resort Municipality is a destination resort community and local government organization, serving as a leader in providing municipal programs, services, progressive planning, and infrastructure for nearly 14,000 permanent residents and over three million annual visitors.

As a four-season destination, water supply is critical to ensuring the tourism industry operates effectively. The municipality manages hundreds of pumps, motors, and valves across its water pipeline infrastructure, monitoring and processing over 63,875 million litres of water annually.

THE CHALLENGE

The resort municipality's water infrastructure reporting and alerting systems were not adequate to ensure water flowed reliably at all times. As a four-season destination, any disruption to water supply had significant implications for both residents and the tourism industry.

Addressing these challenges required improved data quality, better real-time visibility across the water system, and a more responsive alerting framework to support operations and management teams.

THE SOLUTION

QCA Systems worked with operations and management to define and refine functional requirements and KPIs, collaboratively documenting and improving their understanding of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) across the water pipeline.

RTUs monitor pumps, motors, and valves across the water pipeline, producing timeseries data transmitted via a cellular network to a secure data centre. The architecture delivered meets security requirements and is consistent with industry standards for municipality water departments. The new dashboard provides a high-level map of all RTUs and their current status, with each valve, motor, and pump assessed for performance metrics including pressure and reservoir levels. Water quality is also monitored with metrics such as turbidity, chlorinity, ultraviolet levels, and colour.
